CIVIL/STRUCTURAL DESIGNER

The role of the Civil/Structural Designer is to support the overall growth and ongoing success of Lanmark through the integration of engineering, construction, drafting, and reception resources to produce an overall engineering package for use by the construction group.

The Civil/Structural Designer is responsible for coordination of the civil/structural scope of projects assigned to the Drafting Team as well as being one of the primary drafters in the Drafting Team. An Intermediate Civil/Structural Designer fulfills a number of responsibilities, completes tasks, and generates products that are necessary for the successful completion of the project.

Job Responsibilities:

Coordinate Projects:

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to develop coordinated construction drawing packages.

  • Assist Project Managers and the design team in planning efficient project execution strategies.

  • Ensure that assigned projects are completed on time. Ensure that tasks are performed by a drafter with the right talent to complete the task.

  • Perform other duties as required to support successful project delivery.

  • Drafting Group philosophy: tasks should be assigned to push the learning of the person performing it. Intermediate Drafters should not be doing Junior Drafter’s tasks.

Produce Civil Grading Drawing Packages Based on Engineering feedstock:

  • With the use of information provided by Engineering, the Designer should be able to design and layout drawing packages for a multitude of different facilities to match the vision provided by Lanmark’s Civil Engineering team within project scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Use Civil 3D to model and create complete grading packages, includes plan, surfaces, sections, details, and cut and fill volumes.

  • Prepare structural drawings, layouts, and details for foundations and structural steel.

  • Draft technical details, specifying dimensions, materials, and procedures using CADD software.

  • Integrate vendor drawings and materials into the overall design.

  • Modify or develop standard project specifications to meet unique project requirements.

  • Review and check engineers’ sketches and designs for feasibility and compliance with applicable standards and client requirements.

  • Analyze designs for constructability, structural integrity, material efficiency, and practicality.

  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of all drawing packages.

Provide Estimates:

  • The designer should be able to complete and be responsible for estimates of assigned tasks.

Provide Mentoring:

  • The designer will be responsible for mentoring all levels of drafters within the drafting department.

Qualifications:

  • Post- secondary design drafting diploma preferred.

    • A two-year program spanning both design principles and good drafting procedures for relaying of a completed piping design and construction package. The program should leave the student with a complete understanding in both AutoCAD and CADWorx Structure (3-D modeling). The EDDT program from SAIT or NAIT are examples.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with a positive, team-oriented attitude.

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of civil/structural drafting experience is preferred.
